Worming up

T. – Today the contradiction between man and nature are acquiring a dramatic character. That’s why we are going to discuss different environmental problems. First of all
       What does the word environment mean?
P. – I think the word environment means simply what is around us.
T. – What are the most serious environmental problems?
P. – The most serious environmental problems are:
·    pollution in its many forms (water pollution, air pollution, nuclear pollution);
·    noise from cars, buses, planes, etc.;
·    destruction of wildlife and countryside beauty;
·    shortage of natural resources;
·    the grows of population.

1.   Introducing the topic and task
a)   Prove the following: (cards)
*    Nowadays there are a lot of environmental problems.
*    People destroy many habitats of animals (and fish).
*    Direct sunlight can be dangerous.
*    Nuclear power station can cause a lot of trouble.
*    Man should solve ecological problems as soon as possible.
*    Rainforests are so important for the life on the Earth.
*    Global warming.

b)  Approximate answers

P1 – Overpopulation, pollution and energy consumption have created such planet-wide problems as massive deforestation, ozone depletion, acid rains and global warming that is believed to be caused by the greenhouse effect. It is one of the greatest dangers of human life on Earth.
P. – The general ecological situation in Ukraine continues to worse. In many regions there is a real threat to flora, fauna and the very existence of a man as a biological species. In 1986 a horrible accident occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power station. There was a nuclear reactor explosion which had far reaching consequences, i.e. nuclear contamination of air, soil, water.
              The Ukrainian Government as well as many ecological organizations is trying to undertake every step possible to improve the general ecological situation in our country.
P2 – I think if present trends continue for the next several decades, our planet will become uninhabited. The seas are in danger. They are filled with poison: industrial and nuclear waste, chemical fertilisers and pesticides.
P3– A lot of forest are so badly damaged that they will hardly be able to recover.
P4– Many scientists think the world is becoming hotter. During the last 100 years people have produced a lot of carbon dioxide. This gas in the atmosphere works like glass in a green-house. It lets heat get in, but it doesn’t let much heat get out. So the atmosphere becomes warmer.
P5– More and more people are told not to be in direct sunlight, because ultraviolet radiation from the sun can cause skin cancer.

2.   T. – What can we personally do to survive? (approximate answers):

a.   Walk or use a bicycle instead of going by car.
b.  Don’t litter with paper, cans or bottles.
c.   Recycle used material such as metal, bottles and paper.
d.  Plant more trees.
e.   Feed birds in winter and help them survive in the cold.
f.   Have showers, not baths. Showers use less water.
g.  Don’t turn the planet into a pile of rubbish.  etc.

3.   Game. Give it a name:

1)  something that kills  people or animals if it is swallowed; (poison)
2)  a place where rubbish is left; (a dump)
3)  something that is used to kill or hurt people in a fight or a war; (a weapon)
4)  a number of people who live in a place, country  etc.; (a population)
5)  making water, air, atmosphere dirty and dangerous for people and animals to live in; (pollution)
6)  a situation where there is not enough of something; (a shortage)
7)  material which was used and is no longer wanted. (waste).

4.   Match the words similar in meaning (using cards).
Example: to ruin – to spoil

to ruin
a little
a crisis
help
litter
to try
to make dirty
dangerous
to surprise
to begin working

rubbish
cooperation
a bit
to test
to spoil
a disaster
to shock
to pollute
to set to work
to clear away

5.   Think of the best way to express the same in Ukrainian:

  global                              nuclear                                                 books
  energy             crises                  ecological             disaster                  a pile of        boxes
  nuclear                              global                                                    newspapers
  ecological

6.   Task: decided which part of human body can suffer from bad ecology most of all and name them.

Skin,  stomach, lungs, blood, arms, the whole body, legs, brain

§   poisoned water;
§   polluted air;
§   television, computer,  etc.
§   bad (ecologically unsafe) food;
§   little physical activity;
§   traffic noise;
§   nuclear radiation;
§   radiation from the sun.

(reasoned answers).

Conclusion

T. – In conclusion I want to say that when our environment is clean and safe every person will be able to live in greater harmony with nature, to preserve our native land for future generations.

Home assignment
What would you do if you were the mayor of our town?
Chernobyl Tragedy

Pre-reading activity

Answer the questions
What happened on the 26-th of April, 1986?
Why do people call the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear plant a tragedy?
Do you know how many people suffered?
How has the world changed since that time?
What did that tragedy show to the whole world?

While-reading activity
          On April 26, 1986, the number four reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear plant in the former Soviet Union exploded, causing the worst nuclear accident in history. Further explosions and the resulting fire released more than eight tons of highly radioactive fallout into the atmosphere. Nearly thirty to forty times more fallout was released than had been by the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
           As a result of the disaster, a territory of 160,000 square kilometres was contaminated. Among the most affected areas were northern Ukraine, western Russia and Belarus. Slighter levels of contamination were detected over all of Europe.
          In the aftermath of the accident, 237 people suffered from acute radiation sickness, of whom 31 died on the spot. On the whole  more than 3.2 million people were affected by radiation. Some experts predict thousands of extra cancer deaths as a result of the disaster.
         After the disaster, four square kilometres of pine forest directly downwind of the reactor turned reddish-brown and died, earning the name of the "Red Forest". Some animals in the worst-hit areas also died or stopped reproducing.
         The Chernobyl disaster also forced the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people. People were asked to prepare for temporary evacuation, to lock their doors and shut down water and gas lines (as after several days they would for sure come back home). But they did not come back in several days or even in several years. Most of the residents left their personal belongings, which are still there today. An exclusion zone of 30 km remains in place today, although its shape has changed and its size has been expanded. The land surrounding Chernobyl will remain contaminated for tens of thousands of years.
         The fires at the number four reactor were extinguished by 5:00 on the same day of explosion. The fire inside reactor 4 continued to burn until 10 May 1986. The fire was extinguished by a combined effort of helicopters dropping over 5,000 metric tons of sand, lead, clay, and boric acid onto the burning reactor.
          In the months after the blast, by December 1986 workers hastily built a so-called sarcophagus to block off the radiation  but it has already exceeded its proposed service life. Now Ukraine, along with the European Union and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, is building a new shelter, known as the New Safe Confinement, to cover the ruins of Chernobyl's No 4 reactor and the existing sarcophagus. The shelter, designed to last 100 years, which will look like a giant arch - as tall as St Paul's cathedral or the Statue of Liberty- is supposed to be in place in 2015.
          During the memorial events dedicated to the 25-th anniversary of the tragic date in Ukraine’s history President Viktor Yanukovych said that the Soviet-era disaster at Chernobyl in 1986 had left Ukraine with a “deep wound which it will have to cope with for many years.”

  1. Read out the quotations and try to explaine their meaning.

- For 200 years we've been conquering Nature.  Now we're beating it to death.  ~Tom McMillan
- Man is a complex being:  he makes deserts bloom - and lakes die.  ~Gil Stern
- The system of nature, of which man is a part, tends to be self-balancing, self-adjusting, self-cleansing.  Not so with technology.  ~E.F. Schumacher
- In an underdeveloped country, don't drink the water; in a developed country, don't breathe the air.  ~Changing Times magazine
T.: What ecological problems can you name?
S.: There are such ecological problems as water pollution, deforestation, hole in the ozone layer, air pollution.
2. T.: What other environmental problems we face in our world?
Student 1: Air pollution, littering, shortage of natural resources, destruction of wildlife and countryside, the growth of population, climate change, greenhouse effect.

T.: What causes these problems and what we should do to solve them?

Student 1:  The air today is rather polluted with smoke from cars, buses, factories and plants. Also this smoke ruins ozone layer, and harmful ultraviolet rays of the Sun can come down and cause skin cancer. The poisoned air also creates so called “greenhouse effect”. In order to prevent this we need quality air-filters at all factories and plants especially chemical and metallurgical ones. Increasing the areas of forests and green zones is important as well.
Student 2: Speaking about water pollution, everyone knows that water is the basis of life. Clean water is as important as fresh air for our existence. Today a lot of rivers and seas are filled with poison: industrial waste, all kinds of chemical elements and pesticides. Industrial enterprises of large cities pour harmful substances into river and sea’s waters. The emissions destroy fishing industry and lead to damage of wildlife. We must stop the poisoning of fresh-water sources. It needs extra water-purifying constructions, to make all enterprises to use only recycled water. Don’t let rivers become dumps!
Student 3: I want to speak about the problem of deforestation. Vast forests are cut and burn in fire nowadays. Their disappearance upsets the oxygen balance. As a result some rare species of animals, birds, fish and plants disappear forever.
Student 4: Other very important environmental problem is the growing level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This greenhouse gas emissions lead to the considerable climate change: growing average temperatures – disastrous results of which we can see already today: weather extremes, destructive floods, and water and food shortages. The way out is to use alternative, renewable energy sources: solar energy, energy of wind and water.

                                                             LET’S SAVE OUR PLANET!
      Everyone must play a part in protecting the environment. There are many things you can do your own every day to рelp save the planet. Here are some suggestions.

REDUCE!

      Really, the best thing we can do for the planet is to use less   of it. At the Earth of the environmental crisis is our consumer society. Here are some questions you can ask yourself before buying something: Do I, or the other person I am buying this for, really need this? Is there another product which would do the same thing but more sustainable? Will this last a long time? Did I know how this item was made, how it will be used and how it will be disposed of?

REUSE!

    Regrettably, because we live in a “disposable society”, we are encouraged to buy a new “improved” item even if the one we have can be repaired. When we buy, we should buy items which are durable, we should maintain them, and have them repaired when necessary. If we practice this, many things can not only last a life-time, but they can be passed along generation to generation. If something is truly unusable for its original proposes, try to be more creative and think of how else it might be used. When you’re done with it, think of whether someone else might be able to use it.

RECYCLE!

   Rather than throwing an item out when neither you nor anyone else can make use of it, have it recycled. And while recycling is not perfect, it is better than sending goods to landfill or having them incinerated.
   Find out what types of materials can be recycled in your area. Clean and sort the materials before putting them out on the curb – often collectors will not pick up recycling that is mixed or contains non-recyclables.

B) Find evidence of these statements in the text:
1. The main reason why our planet is in danger is our uncontrolled
willingness to buy goods even they aren't necessary.
2. Consumers should have in mind the necessity of buying products that can last for a long time.
3. Everybody has not only the worry about keeping things in working order but also restoring them good condition in order to put the “Reuse” principle in practice.

                                        REPORTED SPEECH

  1. Correct the mistakes..
a)      “There are also many things you can do on your own everyday to help save the planet.”
Greenpeace told us there was many things you could do to on your own to save the planet.
b)      “Will this last a long time?”
We wanted to know if this will last a long time.
c)      “How was this item made?”
I asked them how this item has been made.

d)     “Be creative and think how else it may be used.”
The Greenpeace members advised us be creative and think of how else it might be used.

1) Read the text; discuss your problem in a role play “A journalist interviews a factory manager, a doctor and some experts”.

Water pollution
Water is necessary for life on the Earth. It is in oceans, seas, lakes and rivers. But very little water on the Earth is good for drinking because it is dirty. Some factories and companies dump chemical wastes, millions of tons of oil into the sea every year. We can only imagine how many seabirds and animals, fish, shellfish die in such water.

The Caspian Sea, the Aral Sea, Lake Baikal and other water-bodies are in danger now. It is dangerous to walk barefoot on the banks of our river Ishim and to swim in our lakes because there is a lot of garbage, broken glass, and plastic, tins, and bottles, thrown everywhere. Some people wash their cars, bicycles in our rivers and lakes,

The Aral Sea was the fourth largest lake in the world. The former sea bed is now a salt desert. It was a home to 24 species of fish. As the result of the shrinkage of the Sea a lot of fishermen lost their jobs. The dying Aral Sea has changed the climate of the region .A lot of people suffer from different diseases

2) Read the text; explain, match the words; complete the sentences; answer the questions.
Discuss your problem in a role play “A journalist interviews a factory manager, a doctor and some experts”.
Ozone holes

In the atmosphere there is the ozone layer. It protects the Earth from the ultraviolet rays of the sun, like a kind of a roof. But the ozone layer is destroyed by aerosol sprays, space flights. So the dangerous rays get through the atmosphere, causing skin cancer and other diseases. We must stop using sprays right now.

To make air clean we need good filters at nuclear power stations, at factories and plants and also in cars and buses.

Many territories and our atmosphere are polluted with different kinds of technological, chemical, nuclear wastes. The intensive development of sciences, industry and chemistry nowadays has made the pollution of our environment a global problem which should be solved by all means.

Deforestation can also add greenhouse’s gas in the air. When the trees are cut down, the forest becomes a desert. The homes of millions of animals and plants are destroyed, too.

If only people took care of the environment and one another, they would never need any medical aid.

Disposing of the garbage

Disposing the garbage we produce every day is a major problem. Finding land for new landfills is becoming more difficult nowadays. But there are 3 R’s: reduce, reuse and recycle. Energy, water, glass bottles, newspapers, plastic, cans, tins can be reduced, reused and recycled.

In some families kitchen and garden trash is easily burnt. The old furniture, clothing and other useful things are cleaned, repaired or given away to people who need them. Some people can make wonderful vases of plastic bottles, cans and painted paper. It helps to save energy, money and to protect the environment and our precious natural resources. We should build factories for utilizing solid wastes.

Everything is connected in the world and we can save the planet from the ecological crisis only acting all together.

1. The rate of the deforestation in the world is alarming. Every day a hectare of the world's forests is being destroyed forever. Why is this happening? There are two reasons - land and wood. In many countries the trees have been cut down because the land was needed for crops. In other part of the world they cut down trees because their wood is wanted. This wood is used by the local people for firewood. Or it is exported to Japan, Europe and North America. There they used for buildings or for making furniture.
Unfortunately, in most places the trees won't be replaced. The soil in the forests is very thin, but it is protected by the trees. When trees are cut down, the soil is washed away by the rain or blown away by the wind. Soon nothing can be grown on it. The forest becomes a desert. Then people will need more land and they will cut down more trees. When we destroy the forest, we lose not only the trees but the homes of millions of animals and plants together with them. At the moment there are between five and ten million species of animals and plants on the Earth. One million of these is extinct. All kinds of species are in danger - fish, reptiles, birds, insects - as well as thousands of plants. Who is guilty of this disaster? The answer is simple: all of us. There are just too many people in the world. The world's population is now over one billion people. Of course, it's very easy to blame the local people. We don't chop down trees. They do. But the products are bought by people like you and me.
